The Chevening Scholarship Programme scheme is specifically designed to give study grants to willing, interested and seriously minded people who are very ready to pursue their academic career in advanced level in abroad.The awards enable Scholars to study a one-year postgraduate Master’s course in any discipline at any UK university.
Chevening is the UK government’s prestigious international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, Chevening offers two types of award – Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships – the recipients of which are personally selected by British Embassies and High Commissions throughout the world.
Applications for 2019/2020 Chevening Scholarships and some Chevening Fellowship awards are open between 6 August and 6 November 2019. Applications for various Chevening Fellowships programmes open at different points during the year.
To be eligible for a Chevening Award you must:
- Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country
- Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your award has ended
- Have an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry to a postgraduate programme at a UK university. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK.
- Have at least two years’ work experience (this may be up to five years for fellowship programmes, please refer to your country page for further details)
- Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 11 July 2019
- Meet the Chevening English language requirement by 11 July 2019
If you do not meet the above criteria please do not apply. Your application will not be considered.

Normally for a one year masters degree programme
Provides full or part funding for full-time courses. Partial scholarships may cover tuition only or allowances only. A full Chevening Scholarship award normally comprises tuition fees, travel to and from your country of residence by an approved route for you only, an arrival allowance, grant for the cost of preparation of a thesis or dissertation (if required), excess baggage allowance, cost of entry clearance (visa) application for you only, and monthly personal living allowance (stipend) to cover accommodation and living expenses. The monthly stipend will depend on whether you are studying inside or outside London.
Method of Application
Applications for Chevening Awards can only be submitted using the Chevening online application system, available through the ‘apply’ button on your country’s page. Detailed advice on applying for fellowships can be found through your country’s fellowship page. Prior to starting your application, please ensure you have the following ready:
Valid passport or national ID card
- University transcripts and degree certificates (undergraduate, postgraduate)
- Three different UK Master’s course choices
- The names and details of two valid referees
Please note that if you are shortlisted for an award, you will be required to log into the online application system and request a reference from your referees. The request will generate an email to the referees and they will need to submit the reference by 25 February 2019.

You can submit your initial application without these optional documents and upload them to your application at any point to 11 July 2019. Please note that if you are eventually conditionally selected for a Chevening Scholarship, it is essential that you provide evidence that you meet the Chevening English language requirements and that you have at least one unconditional offer from an eligible course by 11 July 2019 in order to remain in the process.

Applications for the 2019/2020 Chevening Scholarships opens on August 6, 2019. Applications for all scholarships and some fellowships close on 6 November at 12:00 GMT (midday UK time). Chevening recommends that you submit your application as early as possible – preferably well before the closing date for your country.
